VoIP Business Phones

If you’re looking for new business telephones or thinking of upgrading your existing office phones, take advantage of what modern telephony has to offer. If your smartphone has more functionality than the phone on your desk, it’s time to upgrade and make the move to Voice over IP (VoIP).

A regular phone lets you make, answer and hopefully transfer calls. But a VoIP service has many advantages over regular phone systems, such as more phone features, better call quality and lower cost. With VoIP, you gain functionality that improves business efficiency and helps you deliver a higher standard of customer service.

All you need for VoIP is an IP phone and a broadband router that’s configured for voice traffic. Hostcomm offers a selection of hardware to get you set up with everything you need. Certain types of hardware work well with VoIP, meeting the needs of any end-to-end voice and data network. But good-quality products need not be expensive. They just need to be well chosen and have a good network infrastructure to support them.

Free softphones

It’s possible to easily download free softphone applications for making VoIP calls over the internet via your computer. Here are two examples of softphones that are suitable for business use and have been tested thoroughly by Hostcomm. They both have smartphone versions for Wi-Fi use.

Zoiper - a free softphone application for VoIP calls over 3G or Wi-Fi. The Zoiper softphone offers a simple user interface and superb audio quality. Zoiper softphones support the IAX2 communications protocol – an alternative to SIP, which can be useful in problematic SIP environments.

CounterPath x Lite, which provides a redesigned interface that offers a contact-centric user experience and popular talk features.

The disadvantage of using softphones is that the free versions do not come with G.729 call compression, which compresses digital voice in packets for lower bandwidth requirement.

Contact Hostcomm for instructions for setting up your softphones.

There are a number of important features to look out for when choosing a VoIP phone. Always check that the phone:
Supports the correct request for comments (RFC) feature for presence, and line-status indication for use with a busy lamp field (BLF).
Supports HD voice.
Supports industry standard POE.
Has a customisable screen that you can put your logo on.
Can be changed or altered remotely by your service provider.
Has a BLF display to monitor employee line status.
When making your choice, it’s also important to note:
If you buy a POE-ready phone, you don’t need to buy a power supply because you can buy a POE switch, which provides power.
Some phones are HD which works ‘on-net’. This means your employees will experience HD, but the UK service providers don’t yet support HD voice, so inbound and outbound calls won’t be HD.
If you choose a softphone, Hostcomm can provide a call forking feature which ensures the handset and softphone will ring simultaneously.
